Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking Tour

Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak and one of the world’s most iconic trekking destinations, offers an adventure that every nature lover and thrill-seeker should experience at least once. Rising majestically from the lush rainforests of northeastern Tanzania to its snow-capped summit at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet), Kilimanjaro rewards its climbers with breathtaking scenery, diverse ecosystems, and a deeply personal sense of achievement.

But beyond its natural beauty, Kilimanjaro is a journey of resilience, self-discovery, and connection—with nature, with others, and with oneself.

At Mama&Baba Africa, we make this once-in-a-lifetime experience accessible and inspiring. With our expert mountain guides, carefully crafted itineraries, and years of on-the-ground experience in East Africa, we are proud to offer you not just a climb, but a truly transformative adventure.

Let us guide you to the “Roof of Africa” with heart, expertise, and unforgettable moments.

We wish you an incredible journey ahead.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN MOSHI

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with your arrival in the northeastern Tanzanian town of Moshi. Upon landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our team and transferred in a private vehicle to your accommodation. The one-hour journey offers your first glimpses of daily life in Tanzania and the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape.

After checking in, the rest of the day is reserved for rest and preparation. If you wish, you may take a short walk through the quiet streets of Moshi or explore some of the nearby natural attractions.

Later that day, you’ll attend a briefing session with our professional mountain guides. During this meeting, you will receive detailed information about the route, your gear will be checked, and any missing equipment can be rented on-site. These final preparations will ensure that you are physically and mentally ready for the incredible journey ahead.

DAY 2: FROM LEMOSHO GATE TO BIG TREE CAMP

Early in the morning, you will be picked up from your hotel and driven to Londorossi Gate at approximately 2,100 meters altitude. Here, park entry formalities will be completed, and the porters’ luggage will be weighed and organized. Once the procedures are finished, you will continue by vehicle to Lemosho Gate, located at 2,389 meters. Along the way, surrounded by lush forests, you will take your first steps into Kilimanjaro’s natural environment.

After receiving your packed lunch here, a short but enjoyable hike begins. This stage passes through the dense rainforest of Kilimanjaro. Walking among towering trees and vibrant greenery, you may have the chance to see native wildlife such as black-and-white colobus monkeys and blue monkeys. If you’re lucky, you might even spot elephant or buffalo tracks.

Rare plants unique to Kilimanjaro, like Impatiens Kilimanjaro and Pseudo Viola, add a special charm to this extraordinary ecosystem. This first day is ideal both to connect with nature and to help your body start acclimatizing to the altitude.

  • Hiking distance: 6.5 km

  • Hiking duration: 3–4 hours

  • Vegetation zone: Rainforest (montane forest)

  • Meals included: Lunch box, dinner (at camp)

DAY 3 – FROM BIG TREE (MTI MKUBWA) CAMP TO SHIRA 1 CAMP

After breakfast at camp, we continue our hike. First, we leave behind the lush rainforests under tall trees. After passing approximately 3,000 meters altitude, we enter the moorland zone. From this point, you will get your first clear and exciting view of Kilimanjaro’s majestic summit—an unforgettable moment!

During the hike, we follow a route with ups and downs across the wide and rocky Shira Plateau, shaped by ancient volcanic lava flows. By the end of the day, we reach Shira 1 Camp. After having lunch and dinner at camp, you can rest and recharge.

  • Hiking distance: 8.9 km

  • Hiking time: 5–6 hours

  • Vegetation zone: Moorland

  • Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Here, you will have your lunch. Afterward, we will descend to the lower Barranco Camp (3,900 m) where you will spend the night.

If you experience mild symptoms of altitude sickness such as headache or nausea today, don’t worry. These are normal signs that your body is adjusting to the altitude. Descending will help you feel better and recover.

At Barranco Camp, you can relax with tea and popcorn and enjoy your dinner.

Today is your final ascent and the amazing day you reach the roof of Africa, your ultimate dream. We will wake you around midnight to begin the last part of the climb. With our headlamps lighting the way, under millions of stars or the glow of the full moon, we will proceed slowly — “pole pole” — our motto to help you acclimatize.

We will take short breaks along the way to encourage you to drink plenty of water and ginger tea, aiding your adjustment to the high altitude.

Thanks to the Lemosho Route, your body will be well prepared and acclimatized, making it very likely you will reach the summit without any issues. When you reach Stella Point (5,756 m), you will see the vast crater and glaciers. Less than an hour remains to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on the African continent.

After capturing unforgettable photos and savoring this special moment at the summit, we will descend back to Barafu Camp, where the porters will greet us with dancing and singing. Following a warm lunch, we will continue descending to Mweka Camp, where you can enjoy dinner and rest well.
